What does the inside of a water heater look like?

Are you wondering how a water heater is constructed on the inside?

To answer this question, we took two water heaters apart and took pictures. One water heater is relatively new and shows no internal corrosion. Even the interior walls are smooth and shiny.

The other shows a surprising amount of sediment and the anode rod has been completely eaten away. Without an anode rod, the hard water will attack the tank itself. The life of a water heater can be prolonged by replacing the anode rod. A plumber can remove the anode rod nipple and inspect the rod periodically.

In the used one, notice that the heating element is buried inside the sediment. This situation results in a water heater that doesn't heat well. The element is still using electricity, it's just heating the sediment, not the water. This is a waste of electricity and money. You can prevent this buildup of sediment by flushing the water heater according to the manufacturers recommendations.
